The Citizen’s mock All-Star Fantasy Draft

With the second annual NHL All-Star Game fantasy draft lined up for Casino du Lac Leamy Thursday night, we asked two Citizen hockey writers — columnist Wayne Scanlan and reporter Ken Warren — to assume the roles the actual team captains, Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara, and conduct a mock draft to see how it might go.

Scanlan got the role of the Ottawa Senators captain and Warren that of the Boston Bruins defenceman. Both writers started their drafting with the assistant captains actually assigned for tonight’s draft already in their stable: New York Rangers Henrik Lundqvist to Alfredsson (Scanlan) and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul to Chara (Warren).

A flip of the coin awarded the first pick to Team Chara/Warren. Here’s how the draft went down, with comments after each pick:

Team Chara/Warren: I’ll begin with Tim Thomas, Boston’s goalie. He’s going to be in the spotlight, anyway, because of his political decision this week to snub President Obama. One Bruin representative labelled Thomas an “(expletive) selfish (expletive)” for his actions, but Chara will stand by his star goalie.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: King Henry and I will take Erik Karlsson. There can never be too many Swedes. Plus, we have to keep Alfredsson’s kids happy.

Team Chara/Warren: Pittsburgh’s James Neal. He has shown the true spirit of the game, honoured to come at the last minute following Alexander Ovechkin’s sulking act.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin. Simply the best. Hey, keep in mind, you need three goalies by Round 10 and six defencemen by Round 15. No one said this was going to be easy.

Team Chara/Warren: Shea Weber, Nashville: A star defenceman knows another one when he sees him. By the way, we wanted Malkin, too.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Philly forward Claude Giroux. Time to beef up the local content.

Team Chara/Warren: Tampa Bay’s Steve Stamkos. If he can score that much when there is checking, the sky’s the limit in a wide open game.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Chicago’s Patrick Kane. Because we might go out for a beer after the game, if not between periods.

Team Chara/Warren: Pavel Datsyuk, Detroit. You’ve clearly caught the spirits, er, spirit of the thing.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Defenceman Brian Campbell, Florida. More local content. The free-wheelin’ former Ottawa 67’s star will be right at home in this format. No defence required.

Team Chara/Warren: Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang. You stole our thunder with Campbell, but we like Letang’s skills, as well. And we needed to start picking defencemen.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Nice choice, but now you’re in the goalie hunt big time. Round 10 approaches. We’ll take a familiar face, St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott, and hope the ice isn’t too slippery.

Team Chara/Warren: Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. He’s also a local, too, sort of. Grew up in Ogdensburg and played Junior B outside Kingston. I wonder how fans will react to seeing Elliott in the “home team’s” net at Scotiabank Place again.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Chicago forward Marian Hossa. The Senators never should have let him go. Bad move, Muckler.

Team Chara/Warren: Ah, Jason Spezza. The love-hate relationship between him and Senators fans is clearly back on the positive side. We want crowd support.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: San Jose forward Logan Couture. Another Brian Kilrea graduate comes home.

Team Chara/Warren: Good one. Time to build up the defence. We’ll go with Nashville’s Ryan Suter. Might be last chance for Ottawa fans to see the unrestricted free agent play with Shea Weber.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Yes, time to complete goalie and defence requirements. We’ll take Montreal’s Carey Price, again, because we are a very “social” team.

Team Chara/Warren: Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick: We’ve always loved the name — can a goalie have a better one? — and he’s got an outstanding game to go with it. OK, my goalies are set.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: My goalies are set, too. But do I really have to pick six defencemen? Karlsson won’t come off the ice, anyway. OK, how about Keith Yandle, fresh off the Coyotes win over Ottawa.

Team Chara/Warren: Philly forward Scott Hartnell. They’re not going to mandate helmets for the warm-ups, are they? The hair is something else.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin. Swedish meatballs for the pre-game meal.

Team Chara/Warren: To be troublesome, I’ll go for his brother, Daniel. I should take a defenceman, but I think Ottawa fans will be intrigued to see if the twins can play against each other.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: We saw that last year in Carolina. And you separated them again. They might be scarred for life. I need a defenceman, though, so how about anover Canuck, Alex Edler. Is there such a thing as too many Swedes???

Team Chara/Warren: I was trying to prevent a PlanetSweden kind of thing. We like Rangers blueliner Dan Girardi. Underrated.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Washington defenceman D Dennis Wideman. In case the game gets physical. Ha ha.

Team Chara/Warren: Toronto defenceman Dion Phaneuf. The fans — ahem, the Leafs fans — voted him in. The celebrity watchers in the office want to know two things. Is he still with Elisha Cuthbert? And if so, is she coming to the game?

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Anaheim forward Corey Perry. Always nice to have the reigning winner of the Hart and Rocket Richard trophies on your side. Perry is pumped to be here, close to his Peterborough home.

Team Chara/Warren: Milan Michalek. It has been a breakout season for the Senators winger, one that’s helping to make fans forget about Dany What’s-His-Name? Besides, it makes it easy for the coaches, playing him on a line with Spezza.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Philly’s Kimmo Timonen because … he’s the last defenceman on the list?

Team Chara/Warren: Can’t argue with that logic. We’re going with Boston youngster Tyler Seguin. Breakout season. Besides, the Bruins say they’ll stick together, regardless of politics. Wonder if Seguin votes Conservative, Liberal or NDP.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Rangers forward Marian Gaborik. Speed kills.

Team Chara/Warren: Calgary’s Jarome Iginla. Class act. Hit the 500-goal mark this season. You don’t hear him asking out of the All-Star Game, do you?

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle. Can he repeat his magic from the 2009 world juniors in Scotiabank Place?

Team Chara/Warren: Islanders forward John Tavares. Great numbers on lousy team. Can anyone else see who might be left as t he last pick in this draft?

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Toronto forward Phil Kessel. If we pick him last again he might quit the game.

Team Chara/Warren: Good for you to spare his feelings. We’ll go with Dallas forward Jamie Benn. A guy who comes to the All-Star Game only a week after having his appendix removed doesn’t deserve to be picked last.

Team Alfie/Scanlan: Somehow it’s fitting a Sabres player would be last, justified by the way this team has disappointed. So, come on down, Jason Pominville! Does our last pick get a car, too??

Team Chara/Warren: Maybe there’s one of those little yellow Citizen cars around. You know, the ones that used to race around the infield at Lynx Stadium.

A lot of this makes sense, except with Lupul as Chara’s assitant there is no chance that Kessel goes that late. I suspect Kessel goes in the first 10 picks.
